I am with you, Paul. I was so surprised that junior high and high school a=
ged kids would even be interested in my writing children's books, but when =
I presented my literacy program along with my rapping and singing, as anoth=
er form of writing, they were all ears and questions. I even offered up my=
microphone to the brave souls willing to expose their vulnerablilities bef=
ore their peers, to step up speak (a calling out of sorts). They loved it!=
I love to see the light go on! Reading and writing equals infinite possi=
bilities. Maybe next year I can take my show on the road and visit some of=
you cool cats!Janice BrownLicensed Real Estate BrokerPark Terrace.com(616)=

Writing can be hard work, but it can give pleasure. I think the art of wri=
ting needs to be taught (or a motivated person may learn it by really consc=
iously applying themselves). I also think that to write well, you need to =
think well-or at least think clearly about how someone else will perceive w=
hat you are writing. =

My wife uses computers and the lure they hold for kids to teach writing (on=
e of the sidelines she infuses into her role as media specialist). With com=
puters the kids are more involved at =93being on the computer=94 than in se=
eing the hard work of drafting and re-drafting a product until it is as pol=
ished as the child can make it. Kids learn they can express things and get=
their POV across to others, and they like that. (not all of them, some fi=
nd it just another school task). =

Some may see this as a not so good reason to write, but it a motivator neve=
rtheless. Kids learn they can get attention through their writing. It is =
another avenue, and a healthier one than some other ways they could try to =
get noticed. =

I may be biased, but when she started this project in this school the 6th g=
raders generally wrote things that were not overly inspired. Now the 6th g=
raders who have had 3-4 years of experience learning how to write are doing=
 much better jobs. =

I read this Pew Research article on teens and writing: http://pewresearch.o=
rg/pubs/808/writing-technology-and-teens =

 =

It made me think about the fact that while the PSL:A&B asks about =93READIN=
G for pleasure,=94 it doesn=92t ask anything about =93WRITING for pleasure.=
=94 =

 =

I wonder what the implications for youth development are. =
