Our school system includes asset development in its strategic plan. They
are hoping that other school corporations which practice asset development
will share specific, measurable outcomes they've identified to help them
assess the success of asset development.
Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

It will come as no surprise to anyone that I, too, am interested in
seeing what the responses are to Barbara's request, so I hope anyone
who responds will share with the listserv.
I wanted to offer a few resources that Barbara and others may find
useful, as follows:
1. I am a big fan of a program started in Minnesota originally called
the St. Louis Park High School 9th Grade Program. It was designed to
address what was perceived at the time as a "culture of failure"
among incoming 9th graders and specifically addresses reducing school
failure, substance abuse rates, truancy and disciplinary referrals.
The program blends increasing assets -- through relationship building
-- with targeted risk reduction to achieve its goals. Originally
developed under a SPF-SIG grant, the program has gotten specific,
measurable outcomes and is now being marketed through the Minnesota
Institute of Public Health under the title Building Assets --
Reducing Risks. Program designers have also applied to have the
program listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs
and Practices (NREPP).
To see the original reports, including process, outcome and summative
evaluations, go to:
http://cehd.umn.edu/CAREI/Reports/SIG/Eval-plans/ and scroll down to
Saint Louis Park. To find out more about Building Assets -- Reducing
Risks, contact Katie Zientara at the Minnesota Institute of Public
Health at (763) 427-5310.
2. This next resource has been around for awhile, but at a recent
training I just did, I heard it mentioned again as still a good
resource. In 2002, the Orange County (California) Dept. of Education
conducted The A.P.I. Study: Academics and Prevention Inseparable. The
study was designed to test how prevention and youth development
activities correlate with academic achievement. The report is full of
specific assets measured as well as strategies piloted in a youth
development framework program using promising practices. And isn't
the Internet a wonderful thing? You can find the complete report at:
www.ocde.k12.ca.us/assetbuilding/downloads/API_study_pages.pdf
3. Another possible source to look at for descriptive indicators tied
to specific assets is the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Standards and Benchmarks for the Anchorage School District. This
report gives a very short primer on SEL and crosswalks specific
assets with SEL goals. The report then delineates indicators and
sample activities for each asset/SEL goal by age group from early
elementary to late high school. This report can be found at:
www.asdk12.org/depts/SDFS/SEL/SEL_Standards.pdf
Barbara, I would love to see a copy of your school system's strategic
plan with asset development embedded in it. I know many of the
educators and I others train are always looking for ideas like this
and want to see what it looks like.
I hope folks find these resources useful.

Deborah

Greetings, all.
Just ran across this grant opportunity and thought some of you might be
interested. Check the web site link below for more details.
The Intercultural Harmony Program, an initiative of the Laura Jane Musser
Fund, promotes mutual understanding and cooperation between groups and
citizens of different cultural backgrounds within defined geographical areas
through collaborative, cross-cultural projects. Support is provided to
nonprofit organizations throughout the United States that initiate programs
that increase the level of interaction between the targeted groups. Funded
projects can be carried out in a number of areas, including the arts,
community service, and youth activities. Planning or implementation grants
averaging from $7,500 to $20,000 are provided for new projects within their
first three years of operation. The application deadline is October 1, 2008.
Detailed application guidelines are available on the Foundation's website.

Greetings, all -
If you know students who have been involved in volunteer community service
during the past year, consider nominating them for this national award.
Follow the link to download the application from Prudential's web site:
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial
and administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals,
recognize middle and high school students for volunteer community service.
Eligible applicants include any young person in the United States who is in
grades 5-12 and has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least
partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application. Local honorees
are selected in November, and from these winners two state honorees are
chosen in each state and the District of Columbia. Out of the state
honorees, ten national honorees are selected and announced at a ceremony in
Washington, DC, in May of 2009. State Honorees receive an award of $1,000
and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, for national recognition
events. National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000. The
application deadline is October 31, 2008. Visit the website listed above for
program details.

survey

Greetings, Asset Builders,
I'm writing to get your help in engaging young people in a new survey that
Search Institute is conducting. Young people who have done it find it
interesting and engaging. We'd love to have more young people as part of
this study. See the announcement below.
I hope your summer is winding down well. Thanks so much for your help.
Warmly,
Gene
*Youth Sought for U. S. Survey of Spiritual Development
*
Young people ages 12 to 25 living in the United States are invited to
participate in a new Search Institute survey on the spiritual development.
All youth who complete the survey will be entered in a drawing to win either
a $25.00 or $50.00 Target gift card.
To learn more about the survey and to volunteer your child/children (or
yourself, if you are 18 or older), click on this link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3DlGdyMwHBcwZjwfkEEUABfQ_3d_3d
The survey is part of a larger study that is being conducted in eight
countries that seeks to deepen our understanding of this dimension of life
across cultures and traditions. This survey is designed to be relevant for
both religious and non-religious youth. Note that we are particularly eager
to increase the number of males who participate in the study.
If you have any questions, contact Angela Hackel at

Thank you!

interested.
