It will come as no surprise to anyone that I, too, am interested in
seeing what the responses are to Barbara's request, so I hope anyone
who responds will share with the listserv.

I wanted to offer a few resources that Barbara and others may find
useful, as follows:

1. I am a big fan of a program started in Minnesota originally called
the St. Louis Park High School 9th Grade Program. It was designed to
address what was perceived at the time as a "culture of failure"
among incoming 9th graders and specifically addresses reducing school
failure, substance abuse rates, truancy and disciplinary referrals.
The program blends increasing assets -- through relationship building
-- with targeted risk reduction to achieve its goals. Originally
developed under a SPF-SIG grant, the program has gotten specific,
measurable outcomes and is now being marketed through the Minnesota
Institute of Public Health under the title Building Assets --
Reducing Risks. Program designers have also applied to have the
program listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs
and Practices (NREPP).

To see the original reports, including process, outcome and summative
evaluations, go to:
http://cehd.umn.edu/CAREI/Reports/SIG/Eval-plans/ and scroll down to
Saint Louis Park. To find out more about Building Assets -- Reducing
Risks, contact Katie Zientara at the Minnesota Institute of Public
Health at (763) 427-5310.

2. This next resource has been around for awhile, but at a recent
training I just did, I heard it mentioned again as still a good
resource. In 2002, the Orange County (California) Dept. of Education
conducted The A.P.I. Study: Academics and Prevention Inseparable. The
study was designed to test how prevention and youth development
activities correlate with academic achievement. The report is full of
specific assets measured as well as strategies piloted in a youth
development framework program using promising practices. And isn't
the Internet a wonderful thing? You can find the complete report at:

www.ocde.k12.ca.us/assetbuilding/downloads/API_study_pages.pdf

3. Another possible source to look at for descriptive indicators tied
to specific assets is the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Standards and Benchmarks for the Anchorage School District. This
report gives a very short primer on SEL and crosswalks specific
assets with SEL goals. The report then delineates indicators and
sample activities for each asset/SEL goal by age group from early
elementary to late high school. This report can be found at:

www.asdk12.org/depts/SDFS/SEL/SEL_Standards.pdf

Barbara, I would love to see a copy of your school system's strategic
plan with asset development embedded in it. I know many of the
educators and I others train are always looking for ideas like this
and want to see what it looks like.

I hope folks find these resources useful.

Regards,
Deborah
