Sponsored by NLC=92s Institute for Youth, Education, and = Families (YEF Institute), this hour-long call, entitled =93Using GIS = and Mapping Tools to Guide Local Action,=94 will take place Thursday, = December 18, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Cities such as Boise, Idaho, Denver, Colo., and Florence, S.C., have = recently used GIS technology and other tools to assess the = accessibility of local youth programs. These tools have also helped = municipal officials map key indicators =97 like school attendance, = juvenile crime and afterschool program participation =97 and compare = that data with the location of a broad range of services for children = and youth. The data gathered from these local mapping efforts can be = critical to ensuring that young people have access to the programs = and services they need most. Identifying Gaps in Afterschool Programming Several cities have used community mapping as a tool for creating = citywide systems of high-quality afterschool programming. For = instance, after learning that some neighborhoods had = disproportionately fewer afterschool programs, the City of Florence = partnered with the school district, police department, housing = authority and community leaders to expand afterschool opportunities = for youth in those neighborhoods. In Boise, the city reallocated city = funds to create mobile educational vans that bring city afterschool = staff and resources to neighborhoods that lack sufficient afterschool = programs. Several cities have also made the findings of their community mapping = projects publicly available through searchable websites and = databases. Residents in cities like Boise, Denver and Boston can log = on to city websites to search for youth programs in their neighborhoods. In Chicago, Mayor Richard M. Daley recently announced a new After- = School Chicago website (www.afterschoolchicago.org) to help youth and = their families choose from thousands of afterschool programs located = throughout the city. Users can input their addresses and search for = programs in eight interest areas: academic, career, creative, health, = life skills, religious, community and sports. Because the site is = powered by Google Maps, search results map program location, dates = and times, related fees, age range and Chicago Transit Authority = routes. Development of the site was led by the Chicago Department of = Children and Youth Services and funded by The Wallace Foundation. =93The After-School Chicago website will make it easier for families to = explore and access quality programs that best suit their child=92s = needs and support their healthy development,=94 said Mayor Daley. Community Youth Mapping Many cities have worked directly with young people on community = mapping projects. The Academy for Educational Development=92s (AED) = Center for Youth Development has assisted municipal officials in = conducting Community YouthMapping, in which cities organize teams of = young people to identify and document programs and services in their = neighborhoods, and then work with the youth to analyze the location = of those services using GIS. The City of Grand Rapids, Mich., is currently undergoing a youth = mapping project as part of a larger youth master planning process. = Members of the Grand Rapids Youth Commission have already received = extensive training, and will begin surveying their neighborhoods in = the coming months. The December 18 audioconference will feature speakers who will = discuss their cities=92 efforts to use GIS and other mapping tools to = guide local action on behalf of children, youth and families. How to Register While the call is free, it is available only to a limited number of = participants. Advance registration is required by close of business = on Tuesday, December 16. A separate registration is needed for each = phone line that will be used to listen to the call. To register, visit www.nlc.org/iyef. No phone registrations can be = accepted. One day prior to the event, each registrant will receive an = e-mail or fax message providing a toll-free, dial-in number to use in = joining the audioconference. Over that past few months, we here at Search are increasingly getting questions from educators and community members who are curious about the intersection between the Developmental Assets and Positive Behavorial Interventions and Supports (PBIS). What we're learning is that many schools are already implementing both frameworks and are creating thoughtful work with both. I'd love to hear from anyone "in the field" who is presently working with PBIS or is trying to implement both within the same system. I know from conversations with educators that using both of these frameworks in a complimentary way is proving to be powerful for students and staff and I'd love to learn more. If you're open for a conversation, let me know so we can talk. If there are multiple people interested, I'd also be happy to put together a conference call to connect you to one another. December 8, 2008 To: Valued Best Buy/Best Buy Children's Foundation Non-Profit Partners Re: The Best Buy(r) @15(tm) Challenge with Youth Venture The @15 Challenge is helping teens change the world. After viewing a video at their school and learning that 6,000 children in developing countries die each day due to drinking contaminated water Jane, Noelle, Melia and Julie from Merrimack, New Hampshire wanted to do something about it. So they started Pure Water Vending. The girls' idea was to sell water through vending machines and donate the profits raised to purchase and install sand filters in remote villages. As of November 2008, they've sold 870 water bottles and forwarded their first donation of $600 to Pure Water for the World enough to buy eight filters. Funds from the Best Buy @15 Challenge would help them raise more money by expanding their enterprise through the purchase of four to five additional vending machines. The girls from New Hampshire are one of 30 teams of teens who are competing this month as finalists in the Best Buy @15 Challenge. Best Buy has partnered with Youth Venture to sponsor the challenge which will provide $10,000 to 15 existing teen-created and teen-led social ventures. The money will be used to expand and sustain their current efforts. Report Ties Children's Use of Media to Their Health The National Institutes of Health and a nonprofit advocacy group, Common Sense Media, have another reason for President-elect Barack Obama to keep urging parents to "turn off the TV." In what researchers call the first report of its kind, a review of 173 studies about the effects of media consumption on children asserts that a strong correlation exists between greater exposure and adverse health outcomes. "Coach potato does, unfortunately, sum it up pretty well," said Ezekiel J. Emanuel, chairman of the bioethics department at the institutes' clinical center, one of the study's five reviewers. The report should compel lawmakers to underwrite media education efforts and public service advertising campaigns and should motivate the entertainment industry to be more "responsible and responsive," said Jim Steyer, the chief executive of Common Sense Media, which helped to finance the study. "The research is clear that exposure to media has a variety of negative health impacts on children and teens," he said. Dr. Emanuel, Mr. Steyer and others plan to brief Washington policy makers on the study on Tuesday. Joined by researchers at Yale University and California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Emanuel's team analyzed almost 1,800 studies conducted since 1980 and identified 173 that met the criteria the researchers set. In a clear majority of those studies more time with television, films, video games, magazines, music and the Internet was linked to rises in childhood obesity, tobacco use and sexual behavior. A majority also showed strong correlations - what the researchers deemed "statistically significant associations" - with drug and alcohol use and low academic achievement. The evidence was somewhat less indicative of a relationship between media exposure and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, the seventh health outcome that was studied. Dr. Emanuel, whose brother, Rahm, is the president-elect's chief of staff, said he was surprised by how lopsided the findings were. "We found very few studies that had any positive association" for children's health, he said. Researchers sought to look at the health effects of a wide array of media and distill 30 years of research into a simple message. "The average parent doesn't understand that if you plop your kids down in front of the TV or the computer for five hours a day, it can change their brain development, it can make them fat, and it can lead them to get involved in risky sexual activity at a young age," Mr. Steyer said. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here in the publishing department at Search Institute we rely on you, our colleagues in the field, to review our manuscripts before they're published. In 2008 we launched a youth editorial board and enjoyed great results. We are about to enter our second year of collaboration with young people, but first things first--we need to elect new members to the board! We plan on selecting youth to serve on the editorial board for six-month increments each year, starting with January=96July and August=96December te= rms. The youth members will have the chance to tell us exactly what they think about our manuscripts=97what they like, what won't work in their lives, what they would love to see included. Each member will receive $50 total for participating in the process, $25 at the beginning and $25 upon completion of the six-month term. Although the majority of our publications are for adults, it's important for us to hear what teenagers think of the asset-building strategies we recommend to asset builders. We are creating a youth editorial board to provide this insight by reading manuscripts before they become books. It will serve as a wonderful opportunity for them to tell us firsthand what they want and need from the adults in their lives. If you know a young person who would enjoy reviewing manuscripts for Search Institute Press, please e-mail me with the following information: First and Last Name Age Grade in School E-mail Address Mailing Address Phone Number Why would you like to participate on the youth editorial board? It seems to me that there are plenty of other youth-oriented posters on leadership, but none on sparks. There are plenty on making a difference but not that cite specific resources with examples in such a short and sweet way (the #3 sections). I'm imagining #1 as the most repeatedly useful as a reminder in a locker or somewhere it would be seen regularly, if it has some good visuals to go with it. Spark shows a spark of creativity and could make a difference in having your message standout from similar campaigns, perhaps igniting more action than the other approaches. But as you can see I got all fired up on the issue of choosing a poster theme and passed over the harder questions (which no doubt you have already answered in your planning) such as what is the purpose of the posters-what behaviors are you trying to change or reinforce, or what sorts of knowledge are you trying to communicate? Those outcomes can help shape the format for the messages. I noted a previous response suggested asking youth for their input. This is a sterling suggestion. In my view, it is a powerful approach to asking the "how" of building assets. And through studying Peter Benson's new Sparks book, I'm learning practical ways to use the skill in my everyday life. It's amazing how much I'm learning, day by day. I'm so happy you're doing this project. Because I've read several versions of the Sparks book and watched the concept unfold and reach greater clarity, I'll make a few comments here for your consideration. A comment about sparks Your three examples of sparks are great! They make me smile because they affirm such a range of passions. For the Sparks approach, I assume you will give a definition that includes the key definitions from the book. Noting your examples: Spark, for example, helps to give one a sense of purpose. However, a person may have many gifts but not have a strong Spark around all of them. I have interviewed many young people with many gifts (for any one young person, ranging from music to sports to drama to working with little kids to you name it), but they can identify one or two that really are their sparks, the ones for which they have a passion, the major one or two that help them want to make the world a better place. About leadership and spirituality Both of these are worthy topics as well, and I appreciate your linking youth to resources on those questions. I appreciate your thoughts about leadership, Colleen. One might also frame your son's outstanding work in athletics as his Spark. One thought about spirituality. Your one question about "when you feel most spiritual" assumes that one never feels spiritual in a mosque or synagogue or church or temple. No doubt you will be asking other questions that do include those young people who, like some of our youth emcees at the HCHY conference, told me that "my religion is my biggest spark." And for them that meant life in their congregation--one, for example, who remembers every Sunday School teacher she ever had, and describes her congregation as a place where "we really take care of each other, and everybody is into everybody else's business." Clearly, others felt that spiritual essence in meeting Nobel Peace Laureates, and others in playing the piano by the hour, so I really opt for the broader definitions and examples as you are suggesting, without excluding formal religious affiliations. You are doing a great work! I would buy these posters for all the neighborhood youth who work with me in my gardens, as well as for my grandsons, and children and grandchildren of friends. It's a great "upper" for all generations. I thank you! Shelby Andress Barbara Bridgwater wrote: > My preference is #1.
