The coalition I work for evaluates RY (SAMHSA model program for 'at-risk' youth) and works closely with the instructors and students and I am so fortunate that I get to hear the success stories--and challenges--of the young men and women that have come through the classes over the past 2 years). A few weeks ago, our City Council declared April "Youth Alcohol Prevention Month" and two RY students (one male, one female) stood up in front of the Council and read what they had written about their life experiences and about the positive impact RY has had on their lives. These kids blew everyone away with their eloquence and presence! I think the students (and maybe others) weren't sure what to expect but the kids received a resounding response from all council members and community members after their individual presentations. These two students were so insightful and moving in what they had written and in how they spoke; it just goes to show the amazing power of listening to youth in our community as they have a lot to say! Each semester the teacher gives out journals for each teen and they also watch the movie "Freedom Writers" and talk about the power of writing. The RY class has also "branded" T-shirts for the group and on the back they read "STAFF;" the young woman who spoke at the Council meeting shared HER idea of what STAFF meant to her: S - strength T - trust A - attitude F - foundation F - family It really doesn't get much better than this and I'm thrilled to bear witness to any of it. Thanks for listening! I have a few stories I've gathered over the years, but need to revisit this topic. If you are a mental health provider making use of the asset framework in your practice, or you know of someone who is, I would like to learn more. How does a strength-based approach contribute to your work? How, if at all, has it changed your interactions with clients? What impact do you see in clients' lives? What impact has it had on how you think about your work? Thanks in advance for sharing your on-the-ground wisdom. Feel free to write to the listserv, or to contact me directly. The medical model of psychiatry tends to dominate in acute settings (in Australia at any rate), and it is without question a deficit-based model. In community/sub acute, and rehabilitation settings strength-based approaches have more of a foothold. I'm in touch with a number of other service providers, primarily in the NGO sector who work this way - I'll pass your post around my network. I'd be interested in an ongoing discussion about this, since the deficit model is fairly heavily entrenched in some places. As part of my first session "get to know you" activities, I have the youth = client complete the assets checklist after giving them a brief introducatio= n to developmental assets. In our 2nd session, we discuss what the developm= ental assets are more in depth (if they don't already know, but some do bec= ause the model is actively integrated throughout our school district), and = review their checklist together. It is a great & simple way to generate a = comfortable discussion & to learn a lot about the young person. It leads in= to all kinds of discussions, and really helps to identify "troubled" areas = or areas of concern in their life (ie. family relationships, low self estee= m, at-risk behaviors, etc.) Since they are receiving the counseling through our school-based family sup= port center, I review all the assets, but focus alittle more on school-rela= ted ones. I help the student to identify adults in the school whom they fe= el they do or can receive support from. And when discussing assets they id= entified as "false" - our discussion helps them get a better understanding = of why they feel they don't have the asset & how they can build that asset.= Sometimes it changes their answer from false to true because they didn't = think of something in a different way (like that they do have non-parent ad= ults in their lives that they receive support from - such as teachers or a = friend's parent that they feel comfortable talking to). I'll go back to the assets checklist sometimes throughout our time together= as it may apply. = We can also look back to the checklist during wrap up and see if the young = person feels they have built on any particular assets, or how they may be a= ble to. In general though, it helps youth clients to identify strengths and esp. ar= eas or relationships of concern - and to do so through a comfortable avenue= of discussion. = -Melissa Frawley Coordinator Family Assistance Center of Tonawanda = = = = Date: Mon, 12 May 2008 16:13:45 -0500From: nancyt@search-institute.orgSubje= ct: HCHY List: Assets and Mental Health?CC: hchylist@lists.search-institute= .orgTo: melissafrawley244@hotmail.comGreetings, asset builders -I have rece= ived a number of calls this month asking how people are using the Developme= ntal Assets in Mental Health settings. She and I have been using the DAP in mental health treatment and case management with youth under the Safe Schools Healthy Students grant in our two rural districts. The instrument and the report generated has been helpful in helping the students set their own treatment goals, concretely watching treatment progress, helping build support teams for each student according to their own needs, and gathering data on the progress. Wendy has created a way to report scores that becomes a tool for both clinician and student. Sponsored by University of Wisconsin - Madison Libraries Using the Media to Promote Adolescent Well-Being [pdf] http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Files/rc/papers/2008/spring_children_ha skins/spring_children_haskins.pdf Many researchers and parents are concerned about the effects of the media on adolescents. It's in no way a new concern, but there is a renewed interest in how media can potentially be harnessed to combat some of the more pernicious messages disseminated by mainstream media. This particular 8-page brief released in April 2008 takes on that very subject. The brief is part of "The Future of Children" initiative, which is jointly sponsored by Princeton University and The Brookings Institution. Authored by Elisabeth Hirschhorn Donahue, Ron Haskins, and Marisa Nightingale, the brief suggests that nonprofit groups and associations can effectively "draw teens into conversations by supplying them with expertise and tools they can share with their friends to become advocates to one another." The report goes on to suggest that working with new media and social networking sites may be more effective than trying to rally against such new forms of expression. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
