Hi Nancy,
With a background in psychiatric nursing, your post below really struck a
chord - I'm been musing over exactly these questions for some time. The
medical model of psychiatry tends to dominate in acute settings (in
Australia at any rate), and it is without question a deficit-based model.
In community/sub acute, and rehabilitation settings strength-based
approaches have more of a foothold. I'm in touch with a number of other
service providers, primarily in the NGO sector who work this way - I'll pass
your post around my network. I'd be interested in an ongoing discussion
about this, since the deficit model is fairly heavily entrenched in some
places.
