I know you haven't heard from me for awhile. I always come back to you when I am struggling with something! ;) That's because I trust you and appreciate your input. Those of you who know me, know that I am in touch with today's generation. You know that I am an advocate of youth as well as young adults. This semester I am teaching an undergraduate research class of 153 undergraduate seniors in allied health majors. I am appalled at the number of them that feel entitled, are dishonest, cheat, etc. There are some that are great but way too many have tried to take advantage of the size of the class and simply don't seem to think twice about lying, cheating, being rude etc. My expectations were clearly laid out. I take my role very seriously and go out of my way to provide a variety of learning opportunities and creative ways of doing so. I challenge them but am also very fair and supportive. They are well aware (at least at this point) that I am not a naive individual, nor one that is going to ignore irresponsible behavior. I am aware that these are not unique concerns in higher education today. I also am aware of the various speculations as to why students behave this way. I am very concerned about what that means for them and their (and our) futures. And, unfortunately, I view the reinforcement of such behaviors as I observe the environment my 17 year old son is growing up in (especially in sports). As we near the end of the semester I feel a need to share my perceptions and concerns. It's not my nature to let these things go. I feel a responsibility. At the same time, what is it I say and how do I say it?! Obviously I would want to begin by reinforcing those that have been responsible and shown character, respect, and integrity. As a side note...I must add an interesting observation...many of the young women are of special concern. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks! Message-ID: <5c3178830904021428w7f0958dfp8bb0b31c629294e7@mail.gmail.com> Greetings, all - I thought some of you might know of young people who would be interested in this opportunity I found on the What Kids Can Do web site: Subject: Crisis and Hope Young people today are living through a time of economic and world crisis. But crisis also gives birth to hope and opportunity. As Graduation Day approaches, WKCD invites students across the country--age 12 to 19--to raise their voice and let others know what matters most to them, in this moment and in the years ahead. Students do not need to be an actual graduation speaker to submit their speech--we're looking for speeches students would LIKE to give. The speech must be 300 - 600 words long and address the theme, "Crisis and hope in these trying times." There will be five winners ($100 gift certificate from Amazon.com). Winning speeches along with honorable mentions will appear on the WKCD website. The deadline for submissions is May 18, 2009. Winners will be announced in early June. Please help us spread the word to as many students as possible! <7614416899B7784A89B95D7F7F517E51F0DF61@PROJECTSRVR.ysa.lan> Miley Cyrus is joining forces with Youth Service America to promote community service for the 21st annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) on April 24-26, 2009. Through the new Miley.YSA.org website, Miley sends out a call to service to children and youth, ages 5-25, to take action and share their stories, videos, and photos for GYSD. Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world and draws the world's attention to the amazing contributions young people make to their communities every day. Millions of youth in more than 100 countries will organize community service projects that address problems in health, education, human service, and the environment. The new online community gives kids the opportunity to find solutions, take action, and share results, supporting Miley's passion toward youth service. The network features are built on a Ning platform and include: * A video call-to-service from Miley * 100 Ways to Change the World * The chance to participate in a service project with Miley * Opportunities for kids to support each other through story telling, photos, videos, blogs, about how they can improve their communities. When my daughter was named a Prudential Spirit of Community distinguished finalist, he wrote a long, asset-rich proclamation and named that day of that year after her. He also invited her to speak in front of the council to explain her service project, and that was televised on the local cable channel. And her photo was in the paper, shaking his hand, etc. It all works toward building on positive public perception about youth. He also has two youth seated on his council, so he walks the walk as well. Hope this helps! -- = Kelly Curtis, M.S. Author, Empowering Youth: How to Encourage Young Leaders to Do Great Things. The Mayor's Action Challenge for Children and Families is a national effort to enlist mayors to set targeted goals and use their public influence on behalf of young people. This initiative, sponsored by National League of Cities, is already endorsed by 105 mayors across the country and provides an opportunity for a more in-depth and comprehensive involvement by elected officials. You can find out more at http://www.mayorsforkids.org/. One of the strategies that is gaining increasing popularity is the Mayor's Book Club (a great community-wide strategy for asset # 25). See http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2007-10-15-bookclubs_N.htm for an article and http://www.hamptonmayorsbookclub.org/ for the way our city is doing it. It is nice to have buy in and support, and best of all actualization of the principles, at the top level. But this is not without some risk. One trap that communities may encounter is having the program becoming identified as "the mayor's program" to such a degree that when a new-comer gets elected he (or she) tosses out the program as part of their effort to eliminate reminders of the previous administration's accomplishments. I know good programs are sometimes eliminated at the State level when a new Governor takes over. I imagine this can also happen at the local level. This is just a reminder that care should be taken to make sure the activities are perceived as belonging to the community, and while the mayor is an enthusiastic leader in this community effort, it is not just something that one particular politician supports. In some cases, this needs to be done very carefully, since some mayors really like ego-tripping, even if it is for a good cause. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm writing today to ask for your help in revising two Search Institute publications, *Taking Asset Building Personally *and *An Asset Builder's Guide to Service-Learning.* I need reviewers for each book, so I'm looking for people who have used the books extensively in their own work. The process for each book will be similar. I will send reviewers a physical copy of the book, along with a list of review questions. What I want to know in general is what they liked about the book, what worked well for them, what didn't work so well, and what they would like to see in the new version. Reviewers can feel free to write comments in their copy of the book and send it back to Search, or they can answer the questions we send along. If you or anyone you know have used either of these books and can be of service, please let me know by next Tuesday, April 28. Thanks! The first one appears bit basic. Both are perhaps more program oriented than some HCHY endeavors are, but they could still be useful. What is the cost to access this training? FRIENDS provides this training to CBCAP State Lead Agencies for free. If you have misplaced your information, please contact your T/TA coordinator . Others can access the training for $10 a credit hour. Payment arrangements are made on the FRIENDS Online Learning Center Site. The FRIENDS National Resource Center for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention recently announced that the following courses have been added to the FRIENDS Online Learning Center: Protective Factors: Strengthening Families and Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect This training was developed for those interested in learning how protective factors can be used to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect. The course will illustrate the difference between focusing on risk factors and using protective factors in child maltreatment prevention, review the five protective factors that research has shown to reduce the risks of child abuse and neglect, and identify strategies that can be used to partner more effectively with families and promote protective factors. Continuous Quality Improvement For any program to provide the best possible services to children and families, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities must be intentionally integrated into all aspects of service planning and delivery. This training will build on what you already know about CQI and what you are doing towards creating a CQI environment in your agency. It will also help you identify the elements needed to develop and maintain Continuous Quality Improvement in family support and child abuse prevention programs. http://www.friendsnrc.org/resources/onlinelearn.htm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
