Message-ID: <9239004b0901050811o3fe1782ch5e286f36c9df8d@mail.gmail.com> Hello everyone! Search Institute is looking for reviewers for a new book we're doing on classroom/youth program skits. Called Great Group Skits, it's intended to be a companion to Great Group Games, and is full of improvisational skits and scenes designed to reinforce ideas like integrity, personal responsibility, communication skills, teamwork, and conflict resolution. We're looking for people with direct experience working with kids between 6th and 12th grade. Perhaps you're a youth group coordinator, classroom teacher, or after-school worker, or perhaps you just spend a lot of time with that age group. Reviews will be due January 23, and you'll receive a free copy of the book when it's printed. Please email me directly at kateb@search-institute.org, and I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks! One of our girls is even researching groups that are working in Africa to see which one best fits her "vision" for helping. It seems like the idea that she could make a difference outside of the walls of her school and home was really big! Stacy Expect youth to do THEIR best, not to always be THE best. Build Assets! We at Search Institute Press are developing a small poster for youth, one that they would like to hang in their locker at school or on a bulletin board at home. I'm looking for feedback on the content of the poster. We've come up with three possible themes, and I would love to know which poster you would be most likely to buy for the teens in your life. Will you read the following examples and vote on your favorite? Thanks! Theme #1: What Is Your Spark? Examples of "sparks" that would appear on the poster are: Building furniture Acting Taking care of stray dogs And questions the poster may pose are: How do you use your gifts to make a difference in the world? Who supports your sense of purpose? Theme #2: Anyone Can Be a Leader Examples of questions the poster may pose are: How do I bring out leadership in other people? How can I inspire people to come together? How do I respond to bullying? Theme #3: Make a Difference Sections will include the environment, social justice and equality, and spiritual development. An example from each section: Lather, rinse, don't repeat. Shortening your time in the shower by only two minutes saves 10 gallons of water. Some random thoughts strike me...... I assume the community is not very large, and thus does not have a lot of agencies serving youth. It is usually easier to pull together fewer people rather than many. What do you mean by "our community?" that is, I presume there is some group that thinks this is a good idea. Has this group actually asked "the community" what they would like to see? Are key players in the youth serving arena part of the group trying to pull these things together or is the group mostly made up of interested citizens? What do external funders (provincial, federal grantors) think about unified strategies, what do rules/laws/regulations say about crossing service area boundaries? Do you include police/courts juvenile justice in general as part of the youth serving entities? In the US child protective services and the foster care system is usually administered from outside the community through state agencies. Are these entities likely to be part of the integrated system? Perhaps the most critical question is, what is the goal of the strategy? One mechanism to convince individual agencies to agree to merge their work and interests (and resources??) with others is a compelling vision of what can be achieved if everyone works together. Have providers/agencies gotten together to forge or agree upon a compelling vision or goal toward which the united strategy would be moving? Do you have some solid assessment evidence of the current state of affairs for youth in the community, and how that differs from the vision and then what is missing or not being done that needs to be done to transform the actual situation into the ideal of the vision? If you do that, then the individual players can see the roles they can play as part of a team to bring the vision about. The implicit "model" in my ramblings above has elements of the ability to envision a compelling end state, to use data and solid planning methods to figure out how to achieve the vision, being open and inclusive of the concerns of all the actors when crafting the vision and doing the planning, and paying attention to the resources and structural supports needed to make the whole thing possible. The details of the strategy your community will develop will emerge from your visioning and planning processes. ________________________________ From: hchylist-bounces@lists.search-institute.org [mailto:hchylist-bounces@lists.search-institute.org] On Behalf Of Sue & Mike Trefry Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 7:27 PM To: Mel Tremper Cc: Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Subject: HCHY List: Community Youth Strategy Our community is looking to develop an integrated youth strategy that would include all youth serving agencies. Do you have some solid assessment evide= nce of the current state of affairs for youth in the community, and how tha= t differs from the vision and then what is missing or not being done that n= eeds to be done to transform the actual situation into the ideal of the vis= ion? If you do that, then the individual players can see the roles they ca= n play as part of a team to bring the vision about. = = The implicit =93model=94 in my ramblings above has elements of the ability = to envision a compelling end state, to use data and solid planning methods = to figure out how to achieve the vision, being open and inclusive of the co= ncerns of all the actors when crafting the vision and doing the planning, a= nd paying attention to the resources and structural supports needed to make= the whole thing possible. The details of the strategy your community will= develop will emerge from your visioning and planning processes. = From: hchylist-bounces@lists.search-institute.org [mailto:hchylist-bounces@= lists.search-institute.org] On Behalf Of Sue & Mike TrefrySent: Thursday, J= anuary 15, 2009 7:27 PMTo: Mel TremperCc: Healthy Communities Healthy Youth= Subject: HCHY List: Community Youth Strategy = Our community is looking to develop an integrated youth strategy that would= include all youth serving agencies. I'd like to share some work that's being done here in San Mateo County, California (San Francisco Bay Area). 1) The San Mateo County Adolescent Report 2007 This report includes data from a youth-led, youth-created, youth-distributed, youth-analyzed, and youth-completed survey that collected over 1400 clean, usable surveys from High School students from across the whole county.? The surveys were distributed at public, private, charter, and alternative schools.? The survey was called the youth Needs Assessment and was the project of the San Mateo County Youth Commission.? They did this because they saw the virtue of ensuring that any course of action that they, and the county, would take regarding youth policy would actually be comprised of youth voice.? Of course, throughout the process, great adult allies and partners from the County Board of Supervisors, Health Department, school districts, and other key community stakeholders helped turn the project into a reality.? The Adolescent Report also includes data from the California Healthy Kids Survey. Beyond the data, the Youth Commissioners also created key policy recommendations based on the needs assessment and qualitative/anecdotal data from Fishbowl Focus groups on the main topics of the Needs Assessment.? The Adolescent Report was approved by the Board of Supervisors and they initiated meetings with heads of all County departments to plan for implementation. That report showed that youth and adult partnerships can and do work.? Because of the commitment of the youth to ensure youth voice and impact on youth policy and of the adults in the community that made sure the project was completed (by funding, by educating youth on public health research, etc.), San Mateo County was honored with the top youth award by the National Association of Counties (NACo) Acts of Caring Awards 2008. The report can be found here: http://www.smhealth.org/smc/department/home/0,,1954_5352214_1029463596,00.html 2)? As a follow up to the Adolescent Report, the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council in San Mateo County, that comprised of County department heads, leaders from large county NPOs, key city leaders, and Youth Commissioners, created and passed the San Mateo County Children and Youth Bill of Rights.? Each right is followed up with short-term and long-term implementation strategies. That can be found here: http://www.smhealth.org/smc/department/home/0,,1954_5352214_1029463596,00.html 3) Redwood City Community Youth Development: One of our larger cities in the county has committed to a long-term Community building plan based on Youth Development and Youth and Adult Partnership methods.? This strategic plan calls for city departments, agencies, families, schools, neighborhoods, policy makers, and youth to work together to ensure that all facets of the city are taking responsibility for the development and inclusion of their young people as current and future leaders of the city. It began with a convening event at a high school that aimed to bridge the gap between youth and adults in the community especially considering that many households reported having no youth.? It evolved into a collaboration of community stakeholders realizing that sincere follow-up to that event needed systematic and structural support.? Youth were involved in helping with creating a vision for Redwood City and will be involved in finalizing the Strategic Plan and implementation. We're still finalizing our long-term Strategic Plan, but I would be happy to answer any questions or guide you to the best people to discuss this effort. ** There are other great things happening here in San Mateo County, but I thought those three options would be a good mix of examples.? Please let me know if you have any questions.? Thanks! I prefer the fill-in-the-blank messages to personalize and make more specific what's being recognized. However, some people might not be as likely to use them if they have to write something. Maybe a mix. For me, the global pre-printed message loses some of its strength. I'm not wild about the "You've made my day" message. Feels like it's encouraging pleasing others a bit much. I like "You did the right thing...," "you're my hero...", and "you were there when somebody needed you..." Other ideas: When police officers tried using something similar to these in our community a few years ago, the feedback they gave is that it would mean more to many young people if the "tickets" had a coupon on the back for something they could go pick up at a store or organization. (Personally, I'm not sure the extrinsic rewards are the way to go, but that was their input.) A neighborhood association also gave them out for a while and posted copies of the tickets on a bulletin board for everyone to see who was recognized. Neither of these groups sustained the effort for very long, but I love it. Perhaps individuals would stick with it longer, instead of whole groups. We are currently developing a new set of resources that are tentatively titled "Positive Tickets." (Many thanks to Ward Clapham and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for inspiring this product and contributing helpful background ideas.) We're hoping you'll take a moment to give us your feedback so we can make this tool as useful as possible. The tickets we are making will be tear-off slips of paper that teachers, program staff, and other caring adults can give to young people. The idea is to "catch" youth doing something right more often than we catch them doing something wrong. They will come in a pack of four tablets bearing different messages (50 of each). Here are our questions: 1. How large would you like these to be? Would you prefer a quarter-sheet of paper (4.25 x 5.5) to make it look like a small certificate, or would you prefer an eighth-sheet of paper (2.75 x 4.25) to make it look more like a coupon? 2. What kind of messages would you like to see on these slips of paper? Would you prefer a finished product that you can just hand out, or would you like to write on the ticket and fill in blanks with names, dates, and specific behaviors? Or would you like two of each? Please indicate which of the messages below you like best. (And please feel free to suggest additional ideas of your own!) POSSIBLE "FINISHED PRODUCT" MESSAGES: You've been CAUGHT.
