Just to echo what Tim voiced ~ Thank you, Deborah, for sending the article ~ It ties in beautifully with what we're doing with our Erie's Promise Student Forum ~ It will be motivational for our students to see what other students are doing. I read about what Princeton was doing a few months ago. I think with all the testing and assessing our students are going through, the "gap" year seems to make sense for the students and, especially, for those parents who are trying to help pay for their education. If any of you have the chance ~ read the book "Doing School" by Denise Clark Pope ~ It's in stark contrast but is, nevertheless, eyeopening.........interesting insight of why we should embrace the "gap" year.......and, furthermore, try to send a very strong message about INTEGRITY and the WORTH of learning as opposed to just "doing school".
young people do, but is so often overlooked. I'm reminded of the effort
several years ago led by students in nearby Cape Elizabeth, ME to force tuna
fishing boats to use dolphin-safe nets--a campaign that changed that
industry. It's nice to see these kinds of stories getting some "air time"
rather than all the doom and gloom reporting we can so often see
characterizing today's youth. Woo-hoo!
